Case study: Tradie breakfasts
Aim: Bring together local experts and professionals in the construction and demolition (C&D) industry to share knowledge and raise awareness around waste reduction.
Waste generated by the construction and demolition sector makes up around half of waste send to landfill in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Tradie Breakfasts aimed to inspire and educate industry professionals, showcase sustainable practices, and offer practical strategies for waste reduction. To date we have collaborated with the Hastings and Taupō district councils to offer the events.
Our objectives
- Raise awareness about the size of the issue
- Share knowledge on waste reduction techniques, strategies, and practices
- Inspire action and co-operation to tackle waste
What did we deliver?
- Hosted a series of informal breakfast sessions covering waste reduction principles and material recovery strategies
- Facilitated the exchange of insights and advice from local experts on effective waste reduction in construction and demolition
- Identified existing pathways for waste diversion within the local region
How did we do it?
- Engaged with local experts as guest speakers to provide insights into waste reduction strategies in the C&D industry
- Collected and analysed data on waste generation, recovery strategies, and material reuse to tailor sessions to the local context
- Fostered collaboration across the industry, established a foundation for joint initiatives that could be activated in the future
“The Tradie breakfasts have provided a greater awareness of the local opportunities that exist with waste minimisation in the C&D sector. 3R was excellent to work with and lent a great deal of knowledge to the events.”
