Electric future for waste collection standard

Featured speaker at SBN / 3R Business Connector event in September. Making the switch to electric vehicles isn’t just a ‘nice to do’ for one of New Zealand’s biggest companies, it makes good business sense too. Waste Management’s Sustainability Manager Adam Weller shared what the company is doing in the electric vehicle space by moving their huge fleet from petrol and diesel to electric power. “We are a really big company so that means we can make a really big difference too,” Adam says. The company currently has a fleet of some 800 trucks and 200 light vehicles. Moving the light vehicles to EVs is as simple as making the change when the fleet leases are renewed, says Adam. Clean, green, electric performance standard

Featured speaker at SBN / 3R Business Connector event in September. An electric-powered vehicle is certainly nothing new, the earliest date back to the mid-1800s. But it’s only in recent years they have begun to gain a foothold in the light vehicle market in New Zealand. Today some 15 major car manufacturers, from Porsche to Hyundai and Jaguar to Nissan make EVs in a range of models from luxury and sports cars to family hatchbacks and SUVs. Unison in Hastings offered the use of their offices as the venue for the September Business Connector event. Their Customer Solutions Manager and EV owner Nigel Purdy says the benefits of making the switch to an electric-powered vehicle are undeniable. The first big ...

Film about thinking global, acting local standard

3R hosted a movie night featuring the Kiwi-made documentary Living the Change, as the first Sustainable Business Network Business Connector event of the year, on April 19. We caught up with the flimmakers Antoinette Wilson and Jordan Osmond. What inspired you and Jordan to make this film in the first place? When we began this project we were at the end of a year-long living-on-set project making our first feature film, A Simpler Way: Crisis as Opportunity, in which we explored many of these issues through the perspective of a group of people living simply, living in community and seeking to understand what it would take to live with a ‘one-world footprint’. That project was a huge learning curve for ...

Making the most of adaptive reuse standard

Featured speaker at SBN / 3R Business Connector event in September. Mention the word ‘upcycling’ and you’ll probably think about tired old furniture or discarded and otherwise useless items which have been spruced up, repurposed and given a new life. However, upcycling isn’t restricted to things you can hold in your hands – the idea can be applied to entire buildings. The FG Smiths building in Napier is a great example, with a once low-value warehouse having been transformed into a trendy and very usable space. The building was the venue for our third Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Regional Business Connector event. PMA Architects were the creative force behind the build, so it was fitting to have Associate Principal Ezra Kelly ...

Building a circular economy standard

Featured speaker at SBN / 3R Business Connector event in September. In order to move forward we need to start going around in circles. Such is the thinking behind a circular economy; one that doesn’t follow the linear process of taking resources, making products and then throwing them away, but rather creating a circular process where products are created and then stay in the system to be reused, recycled or repurposed. Nothing is wasted. The venue of our third Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Regional Business Connector event, FG Smiths, is the perfect example of this theory in practice. The building in which the popular eatery is housed was remodelled with circular economy building practices firmly at the forefront of the design. ...
