Call to end lubricant packaging waste standard

Media release Major lubricant industry brands are calling on importers and distributors in the market to join them in tackling the issue of millions of lubricant packages being discarded every year. A Waste Lubricant Container Product Stewardship Scheme has been established with the aims of exploring recycling options for lubricant containers. It is estimated that around 7 million (20 litre and under) lubricant and grease containers, plus an unknown number of 200 litre drums, are sent to landfills each year. The scheme will aim to “close the loop” on lubricant packaging and contribute to the development of a Circular Economy in New Zealand, with a focus on supporting the development of processing capacity and end use markets. “Considering that most ...

New service with twice the chemical kick standard

A new chemical collection service has not only seen Palmerston North residents safely dispose of over 800kg of unwanted chemicals for free, but also helped educate them around hazardous waste. The MyHazWaste service, run by chemical collection experts 3R Group, held its first event in Palmerston North on June 16. The council-funded event gave residents the chance to safely dispose of household, garden, garage and pool chemicals for free. 3R Group ChemCollect general manager Jason Richards said the event was designed to improve upon traditional hazmobile events. “We used an evolved collection model which allows for a controlled collection methodology, accurate data collection and increased public education.” This ensured only substances which have no disposal pathways were collected, he said. ...

Child car seat recycling a sign of the times standard

Just a few years ago there weren’t many people who would think it was possible to recycle a child car seat, much less have an option to actually do so. However, since the trial and official launch of the SeatSmart child car seat recycling programme over 8,000 seats have been diverted from landfill. The programme may seem rather niche in the greater recycling landscape but it’s a sign of things to come, when the majority of items coming into the household will have a pathway for reuse, repurposing or recycling.
